Boyer’s action and adventure fantasy novel for preteens and young adults, Island Games: Mystery of the Four Quadrants, is a fast-paced and exciting tale about two young men who inexplicably find themselves on a deserted island and must use their wits to survive as they explore their new environs and learn how to survive there. Watching as they adapt to the challenges they face is fun, and one can see how their experiences with video gaming enhance their survival skills just about as much as their real-life experiences do. Boyer’s plot is engaging and inventive; he gives Matt, Ryan and the reader any number of challenges to figure out and pitfalls to watch out for. Matt and Ryan are well-defined, authentic characters whose friendship is enhanced by their experiences on the island. The reader sees them learn to act as a real team as each one takes on the responsibility for the other’s safety and welfare. The story is well-written, and the action scenes are dynamic and vividly portrayed. Island Games: Mystery of the Four Quadrants is highly recommended."
